The Learning and Skills themed group aims to ensure that the highest quality opportunities in education, learning and training exist throughout Darlington; that school performance is improved; and that aspirations and standards of achievement are raised for all age groups.

The actions listed in the Community Strategy highlight the need to increase free, good-quality early years education and childcare places; to improve pupil attainment at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4; and to improve attendance at schools. Positive steps are being taken to increase the percentage of people aged 16 and above who are engaged in structured learning, as well as the percentage of adults and children involved with Family Learning in Darlington. Considerable work is taking place to ensure that basic numeracy and literacy skills are improved across the population of the town.
