Darlington Borough Council is striving to deliver ever more sustainable waste management services. In 2003 a kerbside recycling scheme collecting paper, cans, glass, PET plastic and textiles was introduced with financial support from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. The scheme provides a recycling collection service for almost every household in the Borough.
In addition to the kerbside collection scheme a network of recycling centres are provided collecting a range of materials including paper, cans, glass, textiles and books.
The Council provides a civic amenity site, which includes recycling facilities for green waste, timber, motor oil and batteries. The site is for household waste only. The site is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day but opening hours vary throughout the year.
Home composting is actively promoted in Darlington as a means of reducing the amount of garden waste that has to be disposed of. Low cost composters are available, which not only benefit the environment but also give the user a valuable soil improver.
