Junior Neighbourhood Watch has been launched in Darlington to encourage young people to take an interest in what is happening in their neighbourhoods and to generate in young people an interest in themselves, their community and crime and disorder issues.
Police officers, along with partner agencies, work with groups within schools, having an initial twelve week programme that looks at bullying, fire safety, personal safety, anti-social behaviour and use of the 999 system.
The JNHW logo has been based on ideas submitted by children taking part in the scheme.
The scheme is aimed at year 6 children and since its launch in October 2003 has been taken up in three schools, with the intention of gradually expanding the scheme to other schools.
The Heads of the schools that have taken up the scheme have all stated their pleasure and satisfaction with the work being carried out.
